Acupuncture is an important means of Chinese Medicine with a long history over 5,000 years. It is also one of the best known of the alternative therapies.
Ancient Chinese believed that living beings have a vital energy, called “qi”. Qi mainly circulates through invisible energy lines known as “meridians”. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system, like a network linking up the whole body. When qi flows smoothly, we are in good health. An imbalance in the flow of qi is how disease begins.
Inserting needles into acupoints can adjust the qi flow and helps one to restore inner balance.
“WHO” has recognized acupuncture in Health For All and drew up a list of disease that acupuncture can treat.
How Acupuncture Works
Modern researches indicate that acupuncture stimulates the secretion of pain-relieving substance known as “endorphins”. It is also believed that acupuncture influences the autonomic nervous system, stimulates circulation and the electrical currents of the body.

What a Typical Acupuncture Treatment is Like
During the interview, you should complete a health history questionnaire and may go through some simple physical examinations. The physician would examine your tongue colour and coating, and feel the pulse to assess your physical health conditions.
After that, the physician gives a diagnosis and draws up treatment programs.
During acupuncture treatment, the physician will insert some needles into your body. You may feel a slight sting, but after that you may feel comfortable or relax.
In order to strengthen the therapeutic effect, the physician will turn around the needles, and you may experience slight pain, numbness, or discomfort.
The treatment usually lasts for about 20-30 minutes.
In order to enhance the treatment effect, the physician may use some other techniques during the treatment, such as massage,moxibustion, cupping, etc.
Usually, Chinese herbral medicine may be given to supplement acupuncture treatment.

“Qi” (energy flow) guards our body against diseases, and it is an important factor
in maintaining good health.
If the Qi flow is out of balance, pain and illness will occur.
Acupuncture is based on the meridian systems (the pathway of the energy flow).
Stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of qi and helps our body to restore balance, and it will result in pain relief and healing of the diseases.
Please note the following things before and after acupuncture:
1. Too tired, hunger, fullness are not suitable for ;
2. Women during menstruation and pregnancy must consult the physician in advance ;
3. After the treatment, drink two cups of warm water, quit cold foods and drinks ;
4. Don’t take bath or wash hair within 2 hours after treatment ;
5. During the process, there may be numb or pain feelings. After treatment, one may feel tired or undergone a series of “detoxification reaction”, such as sweating, diarrhea, joint pain. Drinking water and taking rest would accelerate recovery.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the wisdom and treasure of thousands of years of accumulated experience of medical practitioners. It is effective in the treatment and prevention of diseases.
Basic Concept of TCM
The Holistic Concept is the core theory of TCM. The concept includes integrity of the body and its relationship with the outer world.
TCM holistic approaches are based on the views of whole-body and whole-person, whole-world. Ancient Chinese believe that their existence was closely tied with the universe. Thus they emphasize harmony with nature.
They also believe that the human body is an organic entity and a balanced whole. Although different organs of human body have different functions, they are both different and interrelated to constitute an integrated relationship. That means a person is a whole unit and indivisible. Thus from the Chinese medicine point of view, local pathological changes may affect the whole body, even whole body surface.
Under the guidance of holistic concept, all aspects must be considered when treating a problem.
We should make a comprehensive analysis on the patients’ physical condition as a whole, including their age, lifestyles, medical history, career and mental state, etc., to find out the problem, to make a correct diagnosis and proper treatment.
Diagnostic methods in traditional Chinese medicine include four basic methods: inspection, listening and smelling, inquiry and palpation.
Through these diagnostic methods, we analyze the causes, nature, and interrelations of the disease, provide evidence for the further differentiation of syndromes, and determine the appropriate treatment and medication.
Each of four diagnostic methods is indispensable and complementary to one another. We use them as a whole to obtain comprehensive understanding of each case.
